Night
Blindness
Night blindness, also known as
Nyctalopia in greek, is a condition whereby it is difficult for
one to see in the dark. It is a symptom of several eye
diseases. Night blindness may exist since childbirth, or may be
caused by injury or an insufficient intake of Vitamin
A.
The most common cause of night
blindness is retinitis pigmentosa, a disorder in which the rod
cells in the retina gradually lose their ability to respond to
the light. Patients suffering from this genetic condition have
progressive nyctalopia and eventually cause a deficiency in
their day-time vision as well.
