Retinol, or Vitamin
A, is fat soluble and is an antioxidant vitamin that is
important in vision and bone growth.
Vitamin A can be
found in milk, eggs, carrots and spinach.
Vitamin A
deficiency
Vitamin deficiency is
common in developing countries. There are about 250,000 to
500,000 children that goes blind each year due to the
deficiency. Night blindness is one of the first signs of
vitamin A deficiency, which later contributes to total
blindness by depriving the cornea from moisture and thus
damaging to the retina and cornea.
Vitamin A
overdose
Excess vitamin A can
be harmful and fatal. The body converts carotene into
vitamin A as it is needed. High levels of carotene are not
toxic as compared to the ester forms. The livers of the
human body will not be able to take the high toxicity level and
will cause death.
Excess intake of
vitamin A may lead to osteoporosis.
