Rickets
Rickets is a disorder of infancy
and early childhood of early childhood of multiple etiologies.
Rickets may occur if insufficient vitamin D is present to
assist in calcium absorption, causing soft and brittle bones.
When insufficient calcium is absorbed by the bone, it does not
harden properly, and is too soft to support the weight of the
growing body properly.
Rickets causes bone pain, slowed
growth in children, dental problems, muscle loss and increased
risk of fractures.
Rickets is a severe and prolonged
vitamin D deficiency that leads to softening and weakening of
the bones in children. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium
and phosphate, which children need to build strong bones. Good
sources of dietary vitamin D are vitamin D-fortified formulas
and milk.
